Right now, the best way to do this is to create a second category that mirrors the first and have the event set to the same for both. Then the second category would display on the event(s).

Just like the tag [category], but then it just adds the number of the category. Wouldn´t it be good to have a tag like [category-name] or something?

I need this function, and I dont understand the solution above.

Currently, the first category's name doesn't print on the calendar, just the color (as you're aware).

The only way to print the actual category name on the event is to add another category and add the same selections as the primary category so they both are identical. Then, on each event, assign the primary category as you normally do, then set the second category to the same. This will then print the category on the event.

Well, i like this solution. only thing is that you have to click twice when you add a new event. :classic: it could be so easy with a tag like [category-name].

I am interested in extending this calendar for use as an event calendar covering a variety of events in a city --- so I need a 'venue' category that I can load up with lots of venues (clubs, halls, restaurants, etc.) and a "Performer" category that I can load up with the names of performers.

In addition, I want to extend the venue category so it can have info associated with each entry- web sites, phone numbers, links to maps, street address, contact info., notes - and something similar for each item in the performer category.

I expect that I would have to do some hacking in php to make this work - but it'd be nice to know if this calendar is too closed for this effort to be feasible.

Is this something seems feasible in v6? or will it be much easier if I wait for v7?

Adding the Venues and Performers categories is easily done, but adding extra info for your venues won't be possible.
