Email notifications

I know that you are planning to add email notifications in version 7 and that it should be out soon, but I am debating whether or not I should just write a cron job to check for updates to the calendar and sending a notice to subscribers about the update. Any suggestions?

I need to know how the e-mail notifications will be handled in version 7. I think each category should have e-mail addresses assigned so that every time a new event is posted to a specific category, an e-mail with all information from that post including which user posted will be sent to the e-mail(s) assigned to that category. Is this correct? Another idea could be the option of the message being sent via instant message client or text message on a phone.
