in the middle of the set up my browser starts asking me for an .htaccess password as if the directory has been protected

I try and enter the password i set up but it gives me an error.

Try installing manually using the .zip file. Upload /calendar to your public web folder. Just make sure you do so using an actual FTP application (not like Frontpage or Dreamweaver) and in forced Binary mode (do not use Auto or ASCII).
