can't access calendar since upgrading MySQL from 4.0.12 to 4.1

Hi. I recently upgraded my MySQL server from 4.0.12 to 4.1 and am now getting this message when I try to add events through the event manager:

> There was an error connecting to the mySQL database.

Please check the database settings in the 'config.inc.php' file and try again.

The error was reported as:
Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client
Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

Any suggestions as to how I can fix this? I can connect to all my other databases through existing .asp code.
