Default flat file newbie question

I don't understand how to write a flat file so that I can add events.

I've read some Forum posts and the closest I've got is this

(1) You will need to open up the "esdates.txt" file that should be in the directory (on your website) where you loaded all the calendar distribution files.

(2) You enter events (three elements separated by commas) in this format ...

02-18-2004,02-18-2004,event_description

The first date is your starting date of the event. The second date is the ending date (for multiple day events). The third item is the event description that will show up on the calendar. (In the instructions.htm file, the FLAT FILE SETUP section explains all of this).

(3) save, and exit the "esdates.txt" file when done.

When I do this and upload the calevents.txt file (I renamed esdates.txt) nothing shows up in the admin area for me to configure.

What am I missing? I am new to php so is there some code I need to preface
02-18-2004,02-18-2004,event_description with?

Where is the documentation for flat files?
Can someone recommend a good php tutorial that would help me learn to write them?

Thanks

This was for an earlier version of ESCal.... the current version of ESCal comes with an event administrator for the flat file. All you have to do, is configure what file name you want in the Setup Manager and then log in to the Event Administrator and choose the flat-file option (if it's shown) and then add event from there.

Let us know how you make out.

I am using 5.5
I just bought it and installed it a few hours ago

Let me try the steps under "Flat File Setup" again.

Like ve9gra said, all you need to do is turn on the option in the Setup Manager and make sure the correct permissions are set for the database directory. Everything else is automatic.

ok. It's working now. When I went to the Admin area before the Add Event form was not there! It is now though so everything is ok! Thanks . . .
