Default How to edit the PHP code?

I was thinking about playing around with some minor edits to the PHP code of several of the modules, like the Events manager, etc. But the code just looks like garbage when I load any of the php scripts into my PHP editor. How do I get the real code to show up, etc?
thanks,
Roger
